Interior Ministry releases details of photographers` case 09.07.11 Four photographers – Gia and Natia Gedenidze, Giorgi Abdaladze and Zurab Kurtsikidze – detained two days ago, have been accused of espionage. Representative of Georgia`s Interior Ministry held Saturday a special briefing. The ministry reports, in consequence of the investigation it has been ascertained that Zurab Kurtsikidze was in contact with representatives of the main intelligence department of Russia`s Defence Ministry. In particular, he was in contact with A. Sinitsin and S. Okrokov, accused of espionage and wanted by the Georgian law enforcement structures. Zurab Kurtsikidze also was in contact with citizens of Russian Federation. Reportedly, in return for material remuneration, Irakli Gedenidze and Giorgi Abdaladze, who were public officials, used to take photos of documents including classified information and give them to Kurtsikidze, who on his hand used to sent the information to Moscow. After having searched personal belongings of Irakli Gedenidze and Giorgi Abdaladze and examined the materials kept in their PCs, law enforcers found photos of schematic drafts of the president`s administrative building, also charts showing routes of the president`s travels, details about the president`s visits and meetings and other classified data. The Supreme Court rejected a Nixon administration effort to stop the New York Times and the Washington Post from publishing the Pentagon Papers. In 1917 the United States enacted the Espionage Act, a law that has made it a crime to “willfully communicate” secret government information that could expose national secrets held by officialdom. Since the law was passed, however, the government has avoided prosecuting journalists for publishing classified information. “The First Amendment’s freedom of speech and the press has protected journalists in the past, though it is not clear whether the courts would consider Assange a journalist,” writes McClatchy. Assange’s “actions are not those of a responsible journalist that would enjoy the protection of the Constitution,” opines Jeffrey H. Smith, a former general counsel at the CIA.
